  15.                         An Amiga Dealer's response:

  17. Well, a sad day has come to pass for all who love the Amiga platform.  As 
  18. you probably know by now, Commodore International has commenced a 
  19. "Voluntary Liquidation" under Bahamian law, and the manufacturer of the 
  20. Machine millions have come to know and love, will soon cease to exist.  
  21. The Doom-Sayers are telling people to sell their Amigas, and buy Macs or 
  22. PC's.  The M. B. 's of the world are rubbing their hands in glee and shout
  23. ing "I told you so" to anyone who will listen; and even some of the most 
  24. loyal Amigans are starting to consider options outside of the platform
  25. they 
  26. have loved so well, and for so long. 
  27.  
  28. I realize that things look bleak, but I wanted to take a moment to discuss 
  29. why the future is not quite so bad as it may currently appear; why it is
  30. that 
  31. the M.B's of the world will still have a platform to complain about for
  32. years 
  33. to come.
  34.  
  35. I've been a dedicated Amiga owner and user for 7 years now.  During that 
  36. period I, like many fellow Amigans, have helped literally hundreds of
  37. people 
  38. to see the advantages our platform has to offer, and to take the
  39. appropriate 
  40. steps to meet their own computing needs.  I follow the state of the Amiga 
  41. the world over through electronic channels, and the vast array of
  42. excellent 
  43. magazines around the world that cover it.
  44.  
  45. I am also an Amiga dealer.  Wonder Computers in Ottawa Canada is one 
  46. of a small number of North American stores dedicated entirely to the Amiga
  47.  
  48. Platform.  We don't just cater to the existing user base either.  We
  49. actively 
  50. bring new people to the platform, be it for Video, Multi-media, Music, 
  51. Animation, Desktop-Publishing, cross-platform compatibility, or any one of 
  52. the many other areas in which our Machines excel.  In the last year,
  53. almost 
  54. 30 percent of our business has come from new users enticed to the plat
  55. form.  Many of these people have been converts from rival platforms:  Mac 
  56. Owners, excited by the prospect of something "better than Quick-Time", 
  57. and still able to run all of their existing software thanks to Jim Drew's
  58. excel
  59. lent Emplant; PC owners amazed by the incredible multi-tasking and flex
  60. ible OS.  Many first time computer buyers have been enticed by the Amiga 
  61. 1200, with its low price tag, and remarkable out-of-the-box sound and 
  62. graphics.  Through it all, Wonder has remained committed to providing its 
  63. customers with the best possible service and support. 
  64.  
  65. We use Amigas ourselves in every aspect of our business, (Thanks Best 
  66. Business Management, Gold Disk, Inovatronics, New Horizons, Scala, Soft 
  67. Logik, SoftWood, and the untold other tremendous software companies 
  68. that have provided us with such excellent tools, with which to conduct our 
  69. business).  Then there are the many magnificent hardware companies that 
  70. have contributed to our daily operations, and of course the countless au
  71. thors of FreeWare and Shareware, without whom the Amiga wouldn't be 
  72. nearly as powerful, flexible, or enjoyable as it is today.
  73.  
  74. The Amiga is an Incredible computer.  Nothing else has such versatility, 
  75. power, and performance.  Nothing else has such a loyal user-base.  And as 
  76. another recently wrote, it is the ONLY computer with a Soul.
  77.  
  78. There are over five million of us Amiga users on this planet.  We live on ev
  79. ery major continent, speak every major language, and span a vast array of 
  80. cultures and life-styles.  Our computers are used in Schools, Churches, 
  81. Video Studios, Recording Studios, Advertizing Agencies, Colleges and Uni
  82. versities, Broadcasting Companies, Governments, Shopping Malls, Re
  83. search Centers, Theatres, and Sports Facilities.  
  84.  
  85. We Amigans are Entrepreneurial, Creative, Talented, and full of Gusto.  
  86. Most importantly, our choice of computer indicates that we are not "Sheep" 
  87. buying a machine just because everyone else is.  Without us, the Amiga, 
  88. good as it is, would have died off years ago.  
  89.  
  90. So, Commodore is gone or going.  Does that mean that we should pack up 
  91. our machines?  I say, NO!  Even without a Commodore, there are hun
  92. dreds of other companies that will continue to support we 5 million and
  93. our 
  94. Billions of purchasing dollars.  NewTek, Utilities Unlimitted, GVP, CSA, 
  95. DKB, Power Computing, Macro Systems, Centaur, and the host of other 
  96. hardware manufacturers are certain to continue producing new and excit
  97. ing products for us for years to come.
  98.  
  99. Wonder Computers and dealers like it will continue to support their dedi
  100. cated users, and try to provide the product and service required by an ac
  101. tive and flourishing platform.  
  102.  
  103. And this is just the beginning.  It is likely that another company or
  104. group of 
  105. investors will pick up the Amiga torch from the falling hands of Commodore 
  106. and continue producing existing machines, and designing new and better 
  107. ones.  The Engineers let go by Commodore may still be interested in 
  108. pursuing new development of the platform, and if not, others can be found 
  109. who will.
  110.  
  111. Some Dealers will leave the platform, some users will sell their machines, 
  112. and some software/hardware companies may well stop supporting the 
  113. Amiga as well, but as I see it, this is simply the separating of wheat
  114. from 
  115. chaff.  The dedicated Amigans in all aspects of the system will stay true
  116. to 
  117. their platform, and continue to stride towards that all-elusive goal of com
  118. puting perfection.
  119.  
  120. We have already survived against adversity, we are used to being in the 
  121. minority, we are at ease with our role as computing  missionaries; and
  122. best 
  123. of all we are not SHEEP!
  124.  
  125. Here's to the Amiga 5000, by whomever makes it!
  126.  
  127. And here's a promise that Wonder Computers, at least, will continue sup
  128. porting the Amiga and its users for years to come!!
